4-H

Being a member of a 4-H club gives children year-round involvement, and without question, provides them with the most well rounded 4-H experience. As a club member, children develop leadership skills, public speaking skills, and social skills as they participate in monthly club meetings, community service projects, citizenship activities, and club outing. 4-H Clubs are organized in communities throughout Greene County. Clubs are led by parent and community volunteers who have been screened and trained by Extension personnel. Since 4-H is a family program, parents and guardians are actively involved at club functions and meetings.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is an independent private foundation dedicated to advancing the biomedical sciences by supporting research and other scientific and educational activities. Within this broad mission, BWF has two primary goals:

To help scientists early in their careers develop as independent investigators.

To advance fields in the basic biomedical sciences that are undervalued or in need of particular encouragement.

BWF’s financial support is channeled primarily through competitive peer-reviewed award programs. BWF makes grants primarily to degree-granting institutions on behalf of individual researchers, who must be nominated by their institutions. To complement these competitive award programs, BWF also makes grants to nonprofit organizations conducting activities intended to improve the general environment for science. A Board of Directors comprising distinguished scientists and business leaders governs BWF.  BWF was founded in 1955 as the corporate foundation of the pharmaceutical firm Burroughs Wellcome Co. In 1993, a generous gift from the Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom, enabled BWF to become fully independent from the company, which was acquired by Glaxo in 1995. BWF has no affiliation with any corporation.

Duke Energy

We support effective education programs and initiatives that span the kindergarten-to-career spectrum, with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, childhood reading proficiency and workforce development. Programs that foster a growing interest in the STEM fields and/or enhance childhood literacy help our communities continue to grow and produce skilled workers who bring new ideas and innovations to our lives. Our children are the future leaders of our communities, and it is imperative that we contribute to their success. Education and training are important throughout one’s career. Workforce development initiatives, including higher education and job readiness programs, can help create the next generation workforce business and industries need to be successful.

The North Carolina Virtual Public School

NCVPS was established by the North Carolina E-Learning Commission in 2005 and began operations in 2007 with the purpose of providing courses that augment those available locally in order to equalize educational opportunities statewide and, in many cases, provide an effective online teacher when a qualified teacher is not available locally. Course offerings are available to middle and high school students.

NCVPS has grown quickly; in Spring 2013, it offered approximately 120 courses, ranging from AP and other college credit courses to honors and general courses in mathematics, science, English, social studies, world languages, arts, career and technical education, and healthful living. In addition, NCVPS offers courses specifically designed for credit recovery, services such as test preparation and career planning, and the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) Blended Learning Program, which pairs an NCVPS content teacher with a face-to face OCS classroom teacher to provide blended instruction to OCS students across the state.

Since its inception, NCVPS has logged over 193,000 enrollments and is now second only to Florida in terms of public virtual school enrollment. NCVPS employs over 400 adjunct teachers, all of whom are certified to teach in North Carolina and are considered highly qualified by No Child Left Behind criteria. The teachers receive special training in online teaching and in the use of a range of interactive technologies to engage 21st-century learners, including video, interactive whiteboards, wikis, active worlds, and online discussion tools.

NC STEM Ecosystem

NC STEM Ecosystem: Driving the Future is a collaborative effort focused initially on eastern NC with support from the NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center, the NC STEM Learning Network and other STEM organizations and school districts.  Based on the foundation of the NC STEM Learning Network, the NC STEM Ecosystem plans to nurture, enable, and encourage STEM education projects in rural eastern North Carolina. The NC STEM Learning Network helps ensure that all North Carolina students are career and college ready by engaging in rigorous and relevant STEM education. NC STEM does this by guiding implementation of the state’s coordinated STEM Strategy to increase student achievement in STEM, creating greater public support for STEM education, and building the resources necessary to make North Carolina’s STEM education the best in the country. NC STEM has developed STEM Attributes and an Implementation Rubric to assist schools and programs to become a quality STEM school or program. A STEM portal provides access to STEM resources and a STEM Scorecard provides benchmarks for STEM in North Carolina.

STEM east

STEM East is developing networks through the collaborative efforts of regional businesses, school districts, economic development municipalities, private foundations, state and local government and many others, Our intent is that students across our region will engage in real-world STEM learning opportunities that directly align with career opportunities in Eastern North Carolina.

Dr. Scott Rawls' Publications

Dr. Scott Rawls’ extensive publication record studying the pharmacological effects of drugs of abuse in planarians indicates that these organisms are ideal for students to study conditions that perpetuate the addictive process, including physical dependence, withdrawal, sensitization, tolerance, and environmental place conditioning. By linking each lesson to National Science Education Standards (NSES) and state standards, incorporating these modules into a broader curriculum is made easier for classroom teachers. We expect this novel program to achieve the multiple goals of: (a) increasing student knowledge about the science of drug addiction, (b) increasing student awareness about the care and use of animals in basic science research, (c) shifting student attitudes about drug abuse, and (d) enhancing student interest in pursuing biomedical research careers.Rhea Miles, PhD.

Wooley Swamp Farms

At the Wooley Swamp Farm campground, nature lovers can find near solitude in a wooded waterfront setting where they can hunt, fish, boat or simply enjoy the quiet a couple of minutes from civilization. The campground, owned by David and Sherry Madures, is right outside the city limit in Greene County off U.S. 13/258 near the northwest Second Street intersection. But the only indication it exists is a simple sign with the words “camping” and a phone number on it.
